The game is set in medieval Spain during the 15th century, and players take on the role of powerful lords, known as Grandes, who compete for control of the country's various regions.
The main objective is to accumulate points through the management of knights and influence over the various regions.
During the game, players must carefully plan their moves, using power cards to determine the turn order and the number of knights to move into the regions. There are also action cards that allow for the application of different tactics and strategies, such as changing the king's position or executing special actions.
The regions are scored periodically, awarding points to players based on their influence and majority of knights.
El Grande is known for its strategic depth, in which players must balance the expansion of their power with the management of limited resources and interaction with opponents. The competition to secure majorities in the regions and earn bonus points makes the game compelling and challenging.
