It is not easy for a son to watch his father destroy himself. It is not easy to forgive, nor to hate. Emanuele Galesi tells us, without rhetoric, a true, dramatic, and incredibly sweet story. When he looks at the hospital room, above the bed he sees a man consumed by drugs. He feels anger. He feels tired, with an infinite tiredness. And he is ashamed, because he knows that for others that gaunt mannequin is just a junkie, a useless wretch. But for him it is different; that man is his father. It is the umpteenth hospital, the umpteenth fall. In the past, his father had always found the strength to get out of it, even if each time it was more exhausting. He, who never shirked from hard work, whether on the job, as long as he managed to keep one, or in the mountains, where with a steady step he led his son as a child and then as a boy. A relationship, the one between the two, made of continuous subtractions, with drugs eroding the normality of their bond, until the inevitable reversal of roles. And once again, it is the son who has to take care of his father, but this time it is different. This time, after the fall, there will be no recovery. It could just be the end of everything, or it could become the opportunity to move beyond their respective wounds and rediscover something authentic to save. A novel that, thanks to the protagonist's point of view, offers a new reading of the problem of drug addiction. Not the heartbreak of a parent who sees every possibility of a future vanish for their child, but the bewilderment of a son who must build on the rubble left by his father.
